When expats call it the reliable choice, they’re not wrong.

Even on its cheapest long-term plan, Astrill costs more per month than most rivals charge with no commitment at all. And the sting in the tail:

Mullvad (€5/mo flat) is the best-value privacy VPN in the world and we’d recommend it for almost anything else, but it does not prioritise Great Firewall evasion, so as an Astrill alternative it misses the point. NordVPN, ExpressVPN, Surfshark advertise obfuscation, but their record inside China is inconsistent at best; people leave them for Astrill, not the other way around.
The verdict
Astrill is a good product wearing a 2015 price tag, kept there by reputation and by customers who don’t know the stealth tech stopped being exclusive. If you’re happy paying $360 a year for certainty, it will keep working. If you’d rather pay a third of that and check the certainty yourself during a refund window, that’s exactly what the alternatives are for.
